At Perspecta, we know healthcare and workers’ compensation technology projects demand more than just strong technology — they require disciplined, expert project management to keep initiatives on track, on time, and within scope. To give you a behind-the-scenes look at how we do it, we sat down with Timothy Lane, Director of Project Management, to talk shop about his approach, lessons learned, and what’s next for project delivery.
In your role as Director of Project Management, how do you ensure client projects are delivered on time and with the quality our clients expect?
Timothy: It starts with our hybrid delivery model. We lead with Agile principles, prioritizing collaboration, adaptability, and iterative progress, while integrating Waterfall milestones and Kanban visualization for capacity management. This blended approach gives us the flexibility to tailor our process to each project’s unique needs while keeping transparency, predictability, and speed at the forefront.

We operate with a “get stuff done” mindset and a high level of accountability. Every effort is proactively managed, aligned with client goals, and executed with precision.

What’s your approach to balancing internal priorities with client demands in fast-paced, highly regulated environments like healthcare and workers’ compensation?
Timothy: In regulated, fast-moving industries, you need to be both strategic and adaptable. We’ve intentionally structured our teams to align closely with both Product and Business Operations, which helps us stay on top of shifting priorities. Our delivery framework gives us the flexibility to plan proactively and manage regulatory complexity while still moving quickly.

Continuous communication, clear prioritization based on business value, and transparency keep us aligned with stakeholders, helping us deliver outcomes that meet aggressive timelines without compromising stability or compliance.

Many healthcare technology projects risk delays or scope creep. How does your team help prevent those issues and keep clients’ initiatives on track?
Timothy: Technology projects in healthcare and workers’ comp are naturally complex, so we take a proactive, structured approach. It starts with clear scoping, tight collaboration with our Product team, and well-defined user stories with specific acceptance criteria.

We run 2-week sprint cadences, backlog grooming, and early risk identification checkpoints. Change is inevitable, but by embedding change control protocols, real-time reporting, and feedback loops, we minimize disruption while staying focused on business value.

You work closely with both our technology teams and client stakeholders. How does that cross-functional collaboration improve client outcomes?
Timothy: Cross-functional collaboration is the heartbeat of how we deliver results. By bringing Product, Business Operations, and Technology teams together from the start, we ensure technical solutions are informed by real business needs.

Daily standups, refinement sessions, and transparent reporting allow us to course-correct quickly, address blockers early, and avoid rework. It speeds up time-to-value, builds trust, and improves the overall quality of our solutions.

How do you manage risk and unexpected challenges during complex client implementations? And what’s your philosophy on client communication when issues arise?
Timothy: We manage risk through early identification and continuous monitoring. Regular refinement sessions, dependency tracking, and cross-functional syncs help surface potential issues before they escalate.

When challenges do arise, our philosophy is simple: communicate early, clearly, and constructively. We conduct immediate impact assessments, re-plan collaboratively, and keep everyone informed. It’s about transparency, trust, and problem-solving together.

From your experience, what’s the most common project management mistake healthcare tech vendors make? And how does Perspecta’s approach avoid it?
Timothy: The biggest mistake I see is underestimating complexity, especially around stakeholder alignment and compliance-driven integration work. It leads to unrealistic timelines and scope creep.

At Perspecta, we avoid this through thorough discovery, pre-implementation mapping, and a hybrid delivery model that balances speed with precision. We focus on getting the scope right before work begins and maintaining flexibility without losing control.

What role does effective project management play in protecting our clients’ operational uptime and business continuity during technology transitions or upgrades?
Timothy: It plays a critical role. We safeguard operational uptime through proactive risk mitigation, phased rollout planning, and clear, ongoing communication. Impact assessments identify critical workflows and dependencies, and we time releases for low-risk windows.

What sets us apart is our discipline in communication thru project sessions, stakeholder updates, and transparent status reporting to keep everyone aligned, reducing surprises and ensuring smooth transitions.

Looking ahead, what project management trends or tools are you most excited about that could further improve how we deliver value to our clients?
Timothy: I’m really excited about AI-driven project management tools and predictive analytics. Platforms like Azure DevOps with AI enhancements are improving forecasting, risk identification, and resource management.

We’re also embracing hybrid frameworks that combine Agile, Waterfall, and Kanban — which is crucial in healthcare where speed and compliance both matters. Additionally, increased automation in reporting, QA, and deployment is allowing project managers to shift focus from routine tasks to strategy and proactive problem-solving.

Ultimately, it’s about adopting new tools thoughtfully to improve transparency, predictability, and measurable value for our clients.
